The Benefits of a CPL Filter

Natures mirror

Circular Polarizing filters (CPL) are a must for my kit. I rarely take a photo without them because of its many benefits which include: Increasing the contrast and reducing glare.

This was taken toward the end of a full day of fishing and after traveling to two different fishing spots. We found a nice and quiet spot at a lake to relax and wrap up the day. The sun was setting and began to cast it beautiful glow on the trees next to us. It was only natural that I whip out my camera and capture the beauty.  I was intrigued by the way the sun lit up the trees and allowed for the lake to act as if it were a mirror – natures mirror.  I waited a few minutes for a couple of kayakers to make their way out of the scene before I began thinking about composition.

I made sure that I had a decent aperture to get the maximum depth of field I wanted. I also used a CPL (circular polarizing filter) to take away some of the glare on water and make the blue sky and its reflection on the lake a bit richer . It took me a few minutes to figure out how to compose the shot and not fall into the water at the same time. In the end, I decided to include a few dead logs that had fallen halfway into the water to add another element to the scene.
